German Studies at WashU

WashU students expect an outstanding, transformational education. They want to expand their worldview and impact the world around them. These are exactly the goals of our German program: to help you critically reflect on your assumptions and discover new ways of communicating with other people. A major or minor in German allows you to explore the highs and lows of history, better understand key cultural and intellectual developments of the modern era, and make connections between the personal and the global. Our goal is to teach you how to learn, analyze, and communicate, so that whatever your academic interests and career goals, you can apply the insights from German Studies and make new connections during your undergraduate career and beyond.

Our program is considered to be one of the finest in the country. Classes are active, thought-provoking, and fun, and the small class sizes allow you to get to know your instructors and fellow students well. We have a strong intellectual and social community thanks to co-curricular activities such as Pizza Pausen (pizza lunches), Filmabende (movie nights), guest lectures, and the national German honor society, Delta Phi Alpha (which arranges activities from concert trips to ice cream socials). Studying German also gives you the opportunity to participate in our study abroad programs, which include summer internships in Berlin, the semester and year abroad programs in Tübingen, and programs specific to business and engineering. Our faculty look forward to advising you on how to make German a part of your time at WashU - herzlich Willkommen!

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)

at RWTH Aachen University

I started taking German classes at WashU thinking they would be a fun addition to my course schedule, but enjoyed them so much that I ended up graduating with a second major in German. Everyone in the department is incredibly kind and welcoming and took the time to get to know me not just as a student, but as an individual. Being a part of the German department was a defining aspect of my time at WashU and one of the best decisions I made as an undergraduate.
