Professor Gerhild Williams was honored for her achievements in the field of Early Modern German Studies, at the most recent Sixteenth Century Society and Conference, which occurred October 17-20, 2019.
The Sixteenth Century Society and Conference (SCSC) is an organization founded to promote the research and dissemination of early modern studies. Three scholarly panels, organized by her former student and WashU graduate Elisabeth Wåghäll Nivre GR '92 (Stockholm University), were held in Professor Williams' honor. The panels featured several of Professor Williams’ former students, including Benjamin Davis GR'14 (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), Maria Snyder GR'03 (Central College), Amy Eisen Cislo GR'03 (Washington University), and Patrick Brugh GR'12 (Johns Hopkins University).
The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures held a reception in her honor on the Saturday evening of the conference, at which remarks were given by Elisabeth Wåghäll Nivre (Stockholm University), Lynne Tatlock (WashU) and Mara Wade (University of Illinois). Further, Professor Williams was presented with an award in her name by Barbara Schaps Thomas AB'76 and David Thomas, for whom her endowed professorship is named. The award will be given to undergraduate students studying German who are undertaking research or internships abroad.
