Your Passport to a Fulfilling Future
Our students acquire skills that serve them well past graduation. Upon the completion of a German major or minor, you will be able to not only able to communicate with the 155 million speakers of German worldwide, but also express yourself with greater clarity and precision in your native tongue. The challenge of expressing complex ideas in German helps you develop a sense of how both English and German can be used effectively in oral and written communication.
In addition to stellar communication skills, becoming familiar with a foreign language and culture helps you to identify and think critically about assumptions and biases, better articulate your own background and viewpoint, and collaborate with diverse partners. These skills can serve you well in a variety of careers both in the US and abroad. If you major or minor in German, you have the opportunity to take an official German proficiency exam, recognized worldwide, which can be used as a qualification to study or work in German-speaking countries.
Finally, learning a new language is fun! It allows you to explore new perspectives, media, and ways of expressing yourself. And it is a lifelong skill that you can continue to develop and utilize well after graduation.
